So what is making mine bolt that are still young. In the shade, kept moist and cool. Weather been cool too. I can't work it out.

Too rich?  I wouldn't plant them where I'd put my squash or toms for instance, but others may not agree.

I agree.  Mine grow best in full sun in ground which has not been manured.

Mine usually fail or get eaten in the ground so this year i put them in crates full of compost
in the greenhouse and they grow like crazy, i missed a crop cos they went from large and perfect to
huge and woody overnight and i had to compost them. Never mind,next ones are nearly ready.

Have you tried growing them in the ground? I threw a few seeds in a parsnip row this year to mark the row and they have done very nicely, in fact so nicely I have put a whole double row in.

I wouldn't do that they grow so fast you will never get through them lol ! every 10 days in normal weather conditions is fine ,little and often like lettuce
