Laying anywhere
« on: May 14, 2009, 16:08 »
My chooks are free range - they can basically go where they like and they are wandering further afield (literally) and so lay where they like.
I have kept them in thier big run for  a few days to see if this helps and I have had a few eggs today.
Let them out into the wilds today after strimming thier pen which was nettles.
Any tips on what I can do to help them lay in the nest boxes ?
Changed the shavings in them to see if that made a difference - boy I do miss my quota of eggs!
Perhaps longer in the run would help ?
Live every day as your last - enjoy life and smile.

There's not really a lot you can do if they're young hens - they'll lay anywhere and be "caught short" quite often. When they're mature they should settle down, but they do indeed need to be in the habit of using the nesting box - leaving them inside their run until they've laid should work :)
