Getting started
« on: January 30, 2014, 16:49 »
I want to get started making wine and some beer, I want to make rhubarb wine when the time comes! Not too long to wait, I have seen his kit on amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002PCKUL0/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ALJGYCAQA4OZY
Would this be any good?  Could some one please tell me where to go and get te kit?  Thanks all

Easy, Mr Heap!

It looks like this is all the equipment you'd need, but you'll also need several 'chemicals' as well!

I'd recommend these people, as they deliver within a couple of days, and are pretty damn good!

http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/index.html

You need two buckets or containers to filter one lot of wine into another, so it may seem over the top, but it is probably the only way you'll be able to keep production going!

I like what they seem to offer, so go for it!

What chemicals? They look good kits and assume I can use a wine kit for beer? So with two 25l buckets I can filter one to another

Steriliser, Campden tablets, energiser, citric acid, pectolase, finings for starters.

(Unless they're included in the kits.)

thanks, spent most of the note compiling a list and researching have just checked out from the Home Brew shop, a 5 gallon white wine kit, with everything needed plus two smaller 5l fermenters to do the rhubarb wine when the time comes and other smaller batches.  Plus extra cleaner campden etc  Spent a few quid but hopefully will work out well!

Don't forget about the bottling equipement - at the very least you will need corks, corker and bottles.  Bottles should be found easily enough, but try to avoid screw bottles particularly if you get a corker that requires a mallet!

I use plastic half-gallon milk bottles, they're food quality, easy to wash out, and cost nothing!

We never really want to keep anything beyond a couple of months anyway, so they get re-used several times!

You can use the two-litre bottles of course, and they fit nicely on the fridge door!

Growster does your wine not keep or you just crack on and drink it?  my plan is to knock out some white then some red and store

I have got bottling equipment and corks coming, just need to round up some bottles, will try the pub see what they do with their empties!

No, we just keep a never ending supply going with a good honest quick red wine recipe, and also some Winebuddy whites, which also mature in a week or so.

There are some two litre bottles of blackberry around, but we really like the original elderberry recipe here - we've made hundreds of gallons and counting since we started in 1974: -

And we never have to change it at all, it only takes a couple of hours to make 6 gallons!

Every thing in order in a great big box.  My real concern is where to place the fermenter, my preferred location is top of my freezer in th garage which has ranged at 18 to 20 through out the day, woud this be ok, woud the occasional opening of h freezer door disturb it?

I think that would be fine as long as you are happy lifting it up there.

Do the lifting when the container only has the minimum amount in it, like 2 gallons, before you top up with water.

When you do rack off, it will all be at the right height!
