Keeping Our cockerel
« on: November 15, 2009, 21:32 »
Hello,I am looking for some advice please.Firstly "Percy" our Black Orpington Bantam cockerel was up for adoption,as my wife and i did not want to annoy any of our wonderful neighbours who at present love our chickens. But we have now decided to try and keep him.As we hatched him under a broody and are quite fond of him now.
I have made him a seperate sleeping accommodation in our garden shed(sound proofed)We are looking towards letting him out a little later in the morning to free range with his 6 girls as he does now.We have to lock and unlock day and night anyway because of foxes.
My main query is will he fret at being kept on his own at night?
He is 10 mths old and very tame.We live in a semi rural setting but we are anxious not to annoy anyone.I would be grateful for any other advice on this matter-Thank you and Best Wishes-Alec

If it were me I'd pop a couple of girls in with him at night to snuggle up with :)

I don't think keeping him on his own at night will benefit you.  Just keep them together!

He may have a quiet crow!!!  or the neighbours may like the sound of the countryside!!!

we've done the same as you and it's surprising how little they do crow. He's right outside our bedroom so when he does crow early it is annoying but so far his good looks are making him a keeper!
