Also have lots of this growing. I suspect it is just a purply grass but thought I;d check in case I am digging out a treasured crop

Might be blood grass. (An ornamental grass.) It's certainly attractive. I think I'd stick a bunch in a pot, and see if it's good all summer or if it starts to look plain weedy.
