courgettes
« on: June 17, 2011, 11:33 »
Morning, I`m new to this, both chatting and allotment gardening.  Got a problem with my corgettes, they are starting to grow but then  some start to rot and drop off, whats the problem here.. Last year grew in pots in garden and had  great results.

Hi
This normally happens when they haven't been pollinated. They grow sort of undeveloped and a funny shape on the end & then rot. Just take these off & get rid of them & hope for some nice bees to come along.

They had better hurry up though ::)
They were £2 for a pack of 4 small ones in the Co-op yesterday!
I didn't buy them but was tempted.........as I'm getting so fed up with the 'usual stuff' :(

Not wishing to gloat (but going to anyway  :)), we are already looking at a growing mountain of courgettes in the veg rack at home - can't eat them fast enough  :D

Time to dice and freeze them  :)

Do they really freeze well? I never expect any veg as watery as that to do anything but turn to mush if I freeze it. It is annoying to have to give them all away though, and I really don't much like courgette chutney.

You could make ratatouille.... if you like it, that is. :)

Chocolate courgette cake freezes well ...  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've found they freeze OK if cooked in a sauce - ratatouille, curry etc.  Does courgette cake/bread freeze?

I must admit I'm wondering if I'll ever get this courgette glut - last time I tried growing them I got about two and then they succumbed to something; this time they're only just flowering as I was late putting them out (cold in the evenings for ages, then didn't have the time).   I'm feeling very jealous of those who have courgettes already!

I only planted mine out last weekend, they're still quite small - but will catch up.
