Depends on the variety, Moggy. But don't fret, they're fine.

I’ve been wondering when to start chitting the potatoes. :?:
Mine are (Sante - Arran pilot – Yukon Gold) will it be ok to start them all off chitting now.
And also
Do you think will be ok to start sowing my Cauliflower 'All Year Round'
If I pot them up in a cell tray and keep them in the greenhouse
and not sure when to do the Purple sprouting broccoli so any advice will be much appreciated   :?

regarding the spuds, i have Pink fir apples and chits are white.green and Nadine, Charlotte and chits are purple, it depends on the variety, but as they grow bigger all will be whitish and soem purple at the tips.
Start chitting them now in a light but cold place, the only heat you need is to protect them from frost, if you cannot heat the greenhouse then either bring them in the house when frost forecast or cover them with a blanket for the night, that'll keep em cosy

I am amazed your Pink fir apple have chits on cawdor. How cool are you keeping them?

Stacking them in GH on top of water-filled containers will also keep off the frost.

Yes i have Cara and Lady Balfour which are not showing any signs of chitting but the PFA are well underway, more forward than the Charlotte and NAdine.  They are all in the potting shed (perspex roof) so as cold as the weather outside + a couple of degrees max.

The PFA may have to go in early

Don't worry about the weather it's just unusual here to get any winter, it's time for early spuds, they won't feel any of this slightly cold temperatures under ground. It's not winter weather at all either.

Lots of 'old timers' on our site have put their spuds in this week.  I put in two rows of anya this afternoon as the ground was dry enough and might not be for a while after this weekend!  But still have second earlies and maincrop to go in at a later date.

don't all spuds go in at the same time? but maincrop etc just take longer to grow/etc than earlies??
