Colin was protecting dying hen
« on: October 22, 2011, 12:06 »
One of our old girls suddenly died, I saw some hens pecking at the hen, so Jim went to investigate, the hen was only just alive.  Jim went to pick her up, she flapped her wings and Colin, our cockerel, attacked Jim, he cut Jim!!  Hen was about 5 1/2 years old.  Just need the other old girls (rhode island reds and white leghorns) to expire!!  We are hopefully buying new point of lay hens next week.

What a gallant protector.   :)
So sorry to hear about your hen.  :(   That is a good age and she had a good life.

Very sad but well done to the cockerel who thought he was doing the right thing. Hope your husband wasn't cut too badly. What hens do you think you will buy this time?

We will gir Rhode island reds, they seem to be the best layers. We are due heavy rain thus week so might have to wait.
