Very late leeks
« on: December 26, 2020, 19:29 »
Hi, I planted my leeks very late this year and as a result they are not far off the size of a blade of grass !  If I leave them in, will they growi in the spring ?

They may well do, but they might also run to seed.  If you don’t need the ground, I would leave them in, but pull them as soon as they get big enough to be worth eating.  If we get a warm spell in spring they will rush to flower, even if they are still tiny.

What sort of leeks are they Lan?

I made the mistake of sowing a summer type years ago, and they were ready far too early, but a winter leek like 'Bandit' lasts until March!

Maybe best to start some new ones, and just use what you have in a potato salad. As News says, they may have some life in them for a month or so, so fingers crossed!

If they get to spring onion size you can use them in a stir fry or chopped in mashed spuds. Sometimes though, the best thing to do is to call it a learning experience and move on.

Hi, thank you all for your replies. I think that I will leave them in to see what happens. I will still sow new ones. I'm not desperate for the space.
