Winter squash - broken off stem
« on: September 22, 2020, 15:03 »
Hi All - I buggered up harvesting an uchiki kuri. I was chopping off the stem with a machete and instead of leaving a few inches of stem like you're supposed to, the whole thing came off with a bit of the squash itself. The flesh looks perfectly fine, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to seal it so it will keep - or is the only way forward to cook it before it spoils?

It should keep a couple of weeks, if you leave it to dry indoors.
Keep an eye on it, if it starts to mould, then you know what to do  ;)

Just to update, I sealed the broken bit with a few coats of PVA - and it kept til last week when I ate the thing - was very tasty!
