Pea Moth - net or no net???
« on: June 09, 2009, 17:54 »
Hello,

Our first ever peas (Ambassador) are just coming into flower.

General consensus ( a gaggle of OB'sND) is not to net  :nowink:, but I think I read on here that the Pea Moth can ravage your pea crop.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Thanks

Mine were well netted until last week when they had reached the top at four foot and were all bending over so I thought sod it and took it off, pea moth is active I think between mid may and mid june, I am sure I read that in the bible

From what I read on the RHS : http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0708/pea-moth.asp

They are around from early June to early August, with most action in July.

It seems to suggest that if you are happy to use chemicals, then spray them when the flowers emerge, else if you can afford it, then cover them with fleece.

If you net peas will they get pollinated? Or are they self fertile?
I find that some years are worse than others. I hardly saw any pea moth last year. Moths hate rain.

Peas are self fertile.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Peas are self fertile.
Thanks DD, that was my next question. So now I know that, under the debris netting they will go.

Thanks everyone for the help
