More raspberry help!
« on: February 17, 2012, 20:33 »
Hi everyone, first post.

I have just taken over my first allotment (well, its half pen half lottie) and wanted to ask for a bit of advice regarding raspberries. In one corner, there is a large cluster of raspberry canes that are around six feet tall. They have even trailed under a pathway and grown either side. Is it best to prune them back now? Or is it too late?

I have had a read of a few other threads on here regarding care of raspberries and it seems that pruning at the end of the growing season is the way to go.

I wasn't sure whether to add my question to an already established thread or to start another. I didnt want to offend anyone by hijacking a thread with my first post though. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the site  :D

Don't know the answer though!  (Someone else will; I'm growing raspberries for the first time this year and I think they've died already!!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

How you prune depends on whether they are summer or autumn berries.

Which ever they are you can prune out any that show signs of old berries on them. If you leave the rest you can find out which ones they are.

If they turn out to be summer fruiting, you cut out the old canes and leave the new that will grow this year. If they are autumn fruiting, you can chop the lot down.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
