Late planting of potatoes?
« on: June 16, 2024, 20:03 »
I've got room for a few more buckets, and I was thinking of potatoes... reports of shortages later in the year have got me thinking  ::) I'm not specifically aiming for the winter festival that can't be named

Which varieties would actually produce tubers if planted in the next week or 2? I've no experience of planting this late in the year, but have the greenhouse if they need to be moved inside later.

I'd have thought one of the earlies rather than maincrop.

You might struggle to find tubers this late in the season (too early for the winter versions), I suspect though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oooh I’d like to try this… hmmm, might have to scour some garden centres (or DIY stores!) to see if there’s anything suitable. Maybe Charlotte?

I recall that one year DD didn't manage to get his until June. Maybe this thread might be of help:

Doubt it - now it's under way with its growth, it will keep going.

Although Charlottes will stay in the ground for months, if that's what you want. Big, but generally not too sluggy (in usual years  ::) )

The Potato House keep sending me adverts for spuds to plant now and harvest at "that time of the year" - don't know why as I've never used Potato House but that's by the by. They are recommending Charlotte and Nicola (2nd earlies) and Jazzy (1st early). I've just planted a few more Maxine (2nd Early) left over from last year as a trial. They are in the ground so I may need fleece or whatever later on. Worth a try anyway.

A neighbour has given me some Setanta seed poatoes, they look a bit worse for wear but have tiny sprouts on already :) So fingers Xd
