Tomatoes dying
« on: April 21, 2010, 10:30 »
:( Hi everyone, I have 30 tomato plants which I have grown from seed, they are now in 3" pots with J.Innes potting on compost.  They where all doing extremely well until Sunday.  On Saturday being a lovely day I thought I would put them out in a sunny sheltered spot to harden off, so that what I did, I brought them in late afternoon and they where fine.  Done the same on Sunday, there was a little more wind about and the compost felt dry so I watered them, brought them in a couple of hours later, got up Monday moring and the leaves have gone from bright green to light green, drooping on most leaves.  Today disaster has struck the leaves are completly dying.  Am so upset.  Can anyone please shed some light on what I have done wrong.  Mandy.

I think you may have jumped the gun. The days may be nice for gardening but not nice for growing. There is a cold wind and it is still too early to put tomatoes outside.
Another possible factor is that they are in small pots and could have dried out more quickly outside.

Thanks Ivor, it looks like back to the drawing board for me.  My neighbour has said I can have some of his.  Next year I will be less hasty and pot in 5" pots instead. Mandy.

Best to pot them on bit by bit - start in 3" then pot on to 5" once the roots fill the 3"

Mine were pricked out into 3" pots and then potted on to 4.5" (but 5" would do) after about 5 weeks

Are they definitely dead? Might be worth trying to pot them on to 5"

Hi Kristen, some of the leaves are a light green colour and curling up at the edges, the rest that are definatly dead I have picked off.  I will try potting them on, can`t loose anything can I.  Hi Lisa I have been bringing them in at night, so I don`t think frost has got to them.  Thank you both for your kind replies. Mandy.

Could also be that you have over-watered them which wouldn't help with the cold night's temps. Not to late to start again..?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
