Title: strawberries in bud
Post by: sclarke624 on April 11, 2009, 15:43
I went on my daily round in the garden today and to my amazement all my strawberries have flower buds already.  I'm sure thats much earlier than last year.  There are various years in my troughs all labeled nicely.  They are Elsanta previous years had strawberries in late June.  I'll have to get my act together now and get straw and start the tomatoe feeding.

My black currants new this year also has some buds on it.  Blueberries are flowering well.  Peppers in the conservatory already in flower.  Some red alert toms in conservatory in flower bud as well.  Raspberries new this year Autemn bliss looking beutiful with green leaves up their canes.

Oh and Just digging up some lovely winter hardy white lisbons nice sizes now.

Ah bliss.

Try winter hardy ones in september White Lisbon.  Mine were rubbish last year but the winter hardy ones did really well.  The year before the non winter hardy were fine!

Gonna do an experiment gonna plant now indoors then out the non winter  hardy and the winter hardy white lisbon and see what occurs.

I  use winter hardy white lisbon Mr fothergills.  Sow March to September.  Non winter hardy fothergills is sow march to July.

My strawberries all have buds and one has a flower out. The red and white currants have those acid-yellow hanging flower things (she said technically), and the blueberries, plum and pear blossom are beautiful. The scorzonera barrel has grown a black sprawling feline pest who really wants to get into the greenhouse. I thought we dug out the autumn raspberries but they're coming up in the middle of the asparagus bed in two places; haven't a clue what to do about that. The snails are out in force with the wet weather, so just did a patrol, especially the spud bags. I can't bring myself to kill snails so I lob them onto the railway line. I love this time of year when things are really kicking off. Tomorrow is determined weeding; dandelions and herb robert have appeared seemingly overnight, and I'm sure there are sycamore seedlings that we've missed.

Glyphosate.  Very carefully applied!

every substance is a chemical - but i know what you mean. When ever you find a bit carefully dig it out a few inches below the surface. It will eventually die if you keep on top of it.

Southcoast strawberries -

My dad has flowers on his strawberries (in a cold-frame) and flowers on alpine strawberries in the open.

Mine are not so forward on the plot... yet.

Warming up nicely - just need a few dry sunlight hours while we have the time to do something on the plot. Rain overnight would be nice followed by some day-time dry.

I'm hoping that pink flowered strawberries give as good a crop as whites... it would be nice to have something different looking as well as tasty and reliable.

I've a variety of different types - more by chance than design. One batch from "Lidls" (is that the correct spelling??) proved really good last year.  :)

Take care...

I have a feeling you might need to protect apricots from frost or you might lose fruit...

My parents had an apricot..... flowered beautifully and well... grew to quite a size. Fruit was always a disappointment - we think that was due to lack of effective frost protection. It might be worth reading up on this // looking / asking for advice.

Sorry....not meaning to alarm you but worth finding out sooner rather than later I think.  ;)

Hi Learner, thanks for that  :). I had the same fear during a recent frost & acted likewise. Once I'd protected the young buds, I then read the leaflet that came with it. Apparantley, once planted, so long as the soil wasn't frozen, frost won't do any harm to the tree. I found it curious too

I know what you mean...  :) Last year I planted a plum tree on dwarf rooting stock... the white flowers are dazzling and a promise of something even better to come if I'm lucky  :)

We have pink flowered strawbs in pots in the graden, surrounding lavender etc -- look good and crop fairly well despite not really getting enough water. Taste good too, especially warm from the sun  :D

I guess they multiply by sending out runners like most other types?
