Sleeping on the roof
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:07 »
Hi Everyone,

I have been reading the site for a few weeks, but feel able to join in now I have my own chickens. We have 3 Bluebelles which we collected on Saturday.

They have settled in beautifully, eating well, inquisitive, still a bit nervous to come too close. They have a large run, with a separate grassy bit which we can close off with a little door to let the grass grow again. They also have a chicken house to sleep in. The problem is, they have taken to sleeping on the roof. They have done this since the 2nd night. Each night we let them have half-an-hour or so on the roof, then go and lit them off and put them into the house, and shut them in for the night. They seem quite happy with it, with just a little flapping and squawking when we pick them up, and once in, they settle down well on the perches.

I don't mind doing this, but I think we need to get them to start going in on their own. Otherwise, we'll never have a holiday again! (My next-door-neighbour would be happy to feed them for a few days but I can't ask her to physically put them to bed every night!).

Any ideas?

The roof of the house is about 4 feet off the ground, and we havn't yet clipped their wings so maybe this will stop them being able to get up?

Thanks for any help and advice.

3B

Hi 3 Blubelles welcome to the forum :D

Sounds to me like your girls are just heading for the highest spot to roost.
Is there anyway you could block of the roof until they get the hang of going in the house at night :?

Keep on moving them back into their house and one night, you'll go to do it and they will have taken themselves to bed.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the delay replying, but I've had to go to work today, for the first time since getting the chickens! It was like leaving children at school for the first time! Anyway, they seem just fine tonight, and quite happy to see us, (or more likely to see the sweetcorn they had as a treat!).

I will keep putting them to bed for the moment and will see how it goes. If that doesn't work after another week, might try blocking off the roof.

I have taken some pictures and will try and work out now how to put them on.

Thanks again,

3B.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
