Tomato blight again ?
« on: May 15, 2010, 23:30 »
I can't believe it. I have grown some tumbling tomato plants but have kept two in the kitchen in case of blight. I noticed about 3-4 weeks ago some white speckles on the leaves and thought nothing of it. Now, the bottom leaves are curling and turning light brown  at the tips. Surely not blight ? please don't tell me it is, especially as they have been inside all the time.

I have cut the leaves off so perhaps I have saved them ?

Probably not .. More likely to be sun scorch or cold damage.

My Toms in the greenhouse are a right sorry lot.

There are no current reports of blight in the UK.
Have a look here and register with them for e-mail warnings of blight in your postcode area.

Ok. Upon closer inspection the white speckles on the leaves are like dried sugar. They are a little sparkly when the light hits them. The base of the stems are darker too.

I hope I haven't done any harm to the plant by cutting the leaves off. They still have their top leaves and perhaps more energy with now be put into the fruit.

There are a few conditions that need to be fulfilled for the blight pathogen to propagate, one of which is a min temp of 10C for 2 days. This simply has not happened.

Have a look at this from the "Growing Sticky" forum for a comprehensive overview of blight & how to avoid it.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for the blight watch link DD, I have now signed up. It will be good to know when the dreaded fungus is about to strike.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

And the white sugary patches ?

Nothing to worry about, it's not a recognised problem.
