Autumn/winter planted onions
« on: June 18, 2008, 15:42 »
Do I plant them in the ground vacated by this years spring planted onions? Or do I put them in the ground allocated for next seasons spring planted ones? Very confusing  :? What do the rest of you normally do?

Thanks

Move 'em somewhere else.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Where, in terms of rotation, though, DD? That's what I'm unsure about.

I wouldn't get too wound up about very strict rotation, as long as you don't grow the same year on year.

Mine are where last year's spuds were & will have brassicas next.

I have read (Geoffrey Smith etc.) that it's OK to grow onions on the same patch for years, building up the fertility? I am trying this by growing mine on the same raised bed as last year and so far no evident problems (I realise it's early days), apart from a bit of the dreaded mildew, which can strike anywhere.

I stick my garlic in at the same time in the same bed. Keeps the onions company for those long winter months!
