Been in 9 days, hoping they'll soon be through. The cucumbers and courgettes sown at the same time are through, butternut squash also taking their usual time.

Good good. Sowed some a little earlier, the same time as some monster seed from the USA, the saved seed germinated quicker and is really vigorous, the imported seed has been useless. Of three seeds, two failed to produce a growing tip, and the one left is very small and puny.

I just hope last years AG seeds didn't cross with a courgette, or squash! Be nice to see the saved seed get the win again though, so it's up to you select few. ( you know who you are!) ;)

Mine were the size of large melons & I then took off all the Pumpkins except 3 hoping that all the energy will go into these 3.

I'd given up on mine as it was looking pretty sickly in the pot and I literally just chucked it out of the pot into the corner of the greenhouse, so I was quite surprised when I noticed it had survived and started growing a month ago. It's now left the greenhouse and is heading down the garden path  I'm hoping it will set some fruit soon, but not expecting any monsters.

I forgot to sign up, and wasn't growing anything interesting this year, but I have just harvested a gynormous accidental lebanese courgette that would have been a contender!
-And I have two massive orange things much much bigger than footballs which can only be Potimarrons as I don't grow Orange pumpkins, but boy they are big.  I thought Potimarron (Red Kuri?) were 'portion control' small football sized  :D

So long as you don't have other pumpkin/squashes in the vicinity, you know that the seed will grow true to type next year so saving seed will be fine. Leave the pumpkin on the plant as long as possible, and feed heavily with potash/comfrey etc etc to ensure good viable seed for next year.

Went to the Harrogate Flower show yesterday. Mine looks bigger than the 2nd prize heaviest pumpkin but no where near the first prize which was a whopping 300lb. I went up the allotment today to have look. It's not as round anymore and putting weight on the sides. Don't know how much longer it will grow though as the stem is slightly split.

Does anyone have any ideas on how the heck I'll move it? It's right down the bottom of the allotment! Someone suggested rolling on to a tarpaulin with lifting handles with several people to move. Where would you get a tarpaulin with lifting handles?

how are everyone's pumpkins doing? I will take some updated pics of mine, my large one seems to have stopped growing and has been caught up by another so I'm not sure which is biggest. I have a plan now of rolling into builders bags and then using 'slide sheets' - like they use to move people in bed - toe manoeuvre the bag up the allotment.

The winner will grow the biggest pumpkin rather than the heaviest.
There will also be a poll at the end for the prettiest pumpkin
There is no prize just a note under your username to say you won :nowink:

The rules.....

Newbies can register but must have 50 posts before end of competition.
Names have to be registered by 30th June to count...make sure your name appears on the list below.
Please show the measurement, with photo to prove it, by 31st October, when competition will end.
Pumpkins being grown for Exhibition Showing* cannot be entered.
Anyone who disagrees with Moderators will be disqualified
Please post on this thread only to register or comment on your progress, waffle will be deleted  ;)

*This does not include a small local allotment show.

Good luck everybody!

Here are Turks Turbans for my 'Prettiest Pumpkin' entry.

They do make good eating, despite lots of folk saying to the contrary  :D :D

Been and measured today - but I need to go back with a bigger tape measure. Here are the photo's. My tape only went to 150cm. Tied a bit of string around and measured once home....it measured 195cm. However they are still on the vine and I might get a cm or two more so I will measure again with a bigger measure and provide photo's at the end of the month.
I have two pumpkins, both measuring about the same, these a photo's of the original one I posted, this one has a slightly split stem which might be hampering it's growth, the other one which has caught it up has got a complete stem so it might overtake yet - don't know how much growing they do in these last few weeks.

Well it's time for my final measurement as I took it off the allotment yesterday - with help from my lovely step dad. My final measurement is 6ft 11 inches which converts to 210.8cms.
Just for anyone that might be interested (this comp is based on size) it weighs 69.56kg which is more than me!!
Here is the photo, I have another if the measurement isn't clear enough.

Well, we did try. Ours was just 1.2m circumference and weighed 20kg.
But we'll try harder next year. Good luck to the winner!

My pictures are late due to holiday.  Not bothering with the largest, they aren't, but quite good looking.
