Hardy Palm - Phoenix Canariensis
« on: July 08, 2009, 18:11 »
Hi,

I,ve had a hardy palm in my garden for a couple of years which I think is a Phoenix Canariensis.  The trunk is like a pineapple when you cut the dead fronds off.  Last winter it caught a severe frost/snow and the centre of the plant rotted away.  The leaves died off and the central part where the new leaves come from completely came out when i pulled some dead leaf off.

I have sliced across the top and the flat area doesn't look dead or dry.  My question is will it ever shoot new leaves or is doomed? >:(

Phoenix palms aren't completely hardy so if it was sold to you as that you should go back to where you bought it from and see if you can get a refund or replacement.

You probably got away with it the first winter as the one before last was fairly mild but last winter was severe and would have done for it.

If the growing point is dead I think your palm is doomed I'm afraid  :(

OUrs was about five or six years old and died off last winter because of the cold. If the middle is dead it's had it.

However, it might be worth taking it out of the pot to see if there are any shotts coming from the rootbase, as sometimes this happens when the main trunk dies off, if there is any life left at all  :)

We live in a fairly hot part of the world and even here a prolonged spell of cold and wet can have the same result - I'd sadly agree that it's doomed!
