Shed base - final question promise!!
« on: September 13, 2011, 22:29 »
I have 4 'chunks' of railway sleeper all the same size and height (about 1ft ish wide) if I just put these on the bottom four corners of the shed so it stands in them off the ground would this work and give enough support? I'm thinking then I'll put chicken wire around the bottom to so nothing can get under? Xx

Eta: the shed is 8x6

Re: Shed base solution?? Is this a good idea?

If they run beneath the walls, not just the corners, and are all level with each other, they should be perfect, but the weight of the shed transferred downwards through the walls to the floor must be evenly distributed, or there will be tears before bedtime.

So I'm going to build the shed base tomorrow, I'm using treated 3x2 to build the base out of and it's 8x6 with joists 2ft apart down the middle.

Now I'm planning on putting tarpaulin down under the base and pegging it into place then staking 2x1 treated timber into the ground and attaching them to the base to give it sturdeness.

My question is is the tarpaulin ok? Please tell me it is because I'm at a loss otherwise, I thought about weed control sheeting but I dont want water to get through do I? I want it to be waterproof on the ground with the shed sitting 2 inches above all the way round and no gaps so nothing can get under it? Am I right?

I am puzzled as to why you are putting tarpaulin under your shed. I moved one last year and set it on bricks and I seem to recall that having a gap under and allowing air circulation is a good idea. You may also create a home for one of our prickly garden friends!
