Storing Garlic!
« on: June 23, 2012, 21:20 »
Hi folks

This will seem a stupid question but I'm a newbi and first ever allotment. I have just pulled up a couple of garlic because I noticed one of them had gone soft.

The ones I pulled up and all the others still planted are ok. Can anyone tell me, the following please:

Where do they need storing for drying out? At the moment I have them hanging in my greenhouse but will this harm my cucumbers etc. The smell of garlic is overwhelming.

Do I need to cut the stems off, once they are dry where do I store them. Is my shed ok?

I can't see it causing any harm to your greenhouse plants.  They need to be hung up to dry if you wish to store them. You can use it fresh ("green" they call it)  though

Normally they get laid out on the plot to dry in the sun  :)  Not at the moment though, so your greenhouse should be ok. They need air flow round them so keep the doors open

Mine are drying in the shed, that's draughty enough  :D
I bring them home to store once they're dry though they'd freeze in the shed

Thank you, I would dry them off outside, if it wasn't constantly raining, but things tend to go missing???

Shall I pull them all up if a couple have gone soft, even though the remaining ones are ok? They are about 4cm across?

I would say they still have some more growing to do....I'd only remove any soft ones, leave the others to plump up  ;)
