Title: Do you know anyone that has gotten the COVID jab yet?
Post by: Subversive_plot on December 09, 2020, 03:02
I heard today that the UK has started to distribute the COVID jab.  [None for us here yet]

Do you know anyone that has gotten the jab yet? How did it go?

They are only giving it to the very old and vulnerable to start with.  Fortunately non of my cronies fall into that category.  I think the problem will be making sure everyone gets the second dose in the 2 week time frame.

No nobody I know, it was on the news all day, they’ve put out a numbered plan of what category you fall into & im in 7 I think, due to my age & no health issues ( good ), my hubby will be in 5 for the same reasons. So I reckon it’ll probably be late summer before I get jabbed. I’m hoping I’ll get offered a flu jab this year too. I used to get a flu jab when I was at work (Nhs) but not since I took early retirement. Hubby has had a letter for one but is ignoring it, for a very intelligent man he can be very stupid at times

It only started being used yesterday, SP.

The first person to be vaccinated outside of a trial was 90 year old Margaret Keenan in Coventry.

The second person was 81 year old William Shakespeare from Warwickshire...
yes, really  -  (this is Britain)  :D

I think I saw them both on television last night.  I believe Mr. Shakespeare was 'suffering the slings and hypodermics of outrageous fortune, and extending his arm against a sea of troubles, And by opposing ending the virus'.  I think Ms. Keenan was doing the same!

Hopefully they'll be able to start inoculating people in the USA and EU soon with the Pfizer vaccine. I don't think the room temp. vaccine jabs will be far behind.  :)

According to that calculator there are about 12,000,000 ahead of me in the queue. (Your call is important to us, please hold)
I might get done by March but I'm still betting May.

The calc assumes a readily available supply for all who want a 'jab'. Without other vaccines being approved I think that will be unlikely. The assumed numbers per week (1m) are probably achievable; I think around 15m flu jabs are given in 4 mths. On a related theme I saw some numbers for the USA a day or so ago: it will likely take till around October over there to reach a level of vaccination to achieve 'herd' immunity.
PS I'm a couple of months after you so have invested in a bigger flask to see me through while I queue up.

What we are hearing in the USA is it will be late summer or early autumn before people that are not in high risk categories get the vaccines. Highest priority now are medical personnel and places with elderly residents with medical conditions (nursing homes, etc.); various officials are also getting the vaccine to set an example. After that, first responders (fire, police, etc.), then elderly (65+) with risky medical conditions.  I'm in the everyone-else category.

Meanwhile, we have abou 3,000 people dying  daily across the country. My eldest son's professor for his master's degree program just informed him that his wife has COVID, and he is quarantined. We are waiting to find out if the professor has COVID, and if we need  to quarantine. Feel like a goldfish living in a blender.

I know there's all sorts of crackpot cures and remedies on the net, but there does seem to be some evidence that vitamin D is helpful in mitigating the effects. We're taking vitamins C and D in fairly high doses plus a multi-vit - does it help? I'm not sure but it does no harm and costs very little. Might be a useful precaution, SP. Hope you're OK and that the tide turns very quickly for you over there.
We're beginning to feel like the Alamo here in Gwynedd, beset on all sides by a huge army. Our local rate has risen to 62/100K but the highest in Wales is over 1800 and much of South Wales is over 1000.

Thanks for the advice John. Aunt Sally, our whole family is following that good advice, washing hands, covering face, maintaining space.

John, I hope your situation in Wales turns a corner! Our State of Georgia is not as bad off as some places. I just watched a report about a hospital in San Bernardino County in California. They are at 300% of capacity, converting hallways and lobbies into medical space, 100% of the medical staff is COVID positive, they are running things with staff that are asymptomatic, but staff is dropping off with illnesses.

No one is really coordinating efforts nationally.
Title: Re: Do you know anyone that has gotten the COVID jab yet?
Post by: New shoot on December 19, 2020, 08:58
SP, the situation over there sounds appalling.  I’m glad you are not too badly off in Georgia, but it is hard to imagine how bad it must be in San Bernardino.

I am in an area of the UK that has just moved up a tier into high alert and we are running at about 250 cases per 100,000.  We are close to London in the most crowded corner of our crowded little islands, so John’s figures for parts of Wales are really quite shocking and speak volumes about how dumb some people are being.

The hospitals here are fairly full, but they are also treating a lot of non-COVID cases.    The danger is that if the virus really starts to run out of control, they will clear the main hospitals again and delay routine treatments and operations. Those medical staff in California are way beyond that and I hope their heroic efforts save a lot of people and don’t make them pay a dreadful price for it.

Wishing you and your family a safe and peaceful Christmas holiday and thank you for your post.  It is thought provoking and puts things into a bit of perspective.  I think a lot of people will read it and wish they could help more, but hopefully having friends here to say those things to and get some support back makes it all a little more bearable x

I appreciate the kind wishes and moral support from all of you. It helps a little just venting and letting someone else know how bad it is here.

As a nation, the USA has had nearly 18 million cases since the start of the pandemic, and is currently averaging 220,000 new cases every single day. I am telling you this not to ruin your holidays, but to give you pause, and to provide a cautionary tale; DON'T be like the United States!  If you are at all thinking about in-person visits with family you don't normally live with, don't do it! Stay alive, stay masked, distanced, wash or sanitize hands and surfaces frequently.

I don't want to be an ongoing COVID "downer" so I will try NOT posting again on COVID through the holidays. Except maybe to post if we remain OK and don't get COVID through my son's professor, and hopefully to post that his wife has recovered.

You may see me post elsewhere, since I am actively working  on my plot.

Stay safe and happy holidays everyone.

Hi S_P,

Yes, my aunt & uncle, both just over 80 yrs old, got called in for the the jab at short-notice last Thursday here in Ormskirk.

Re your second question - how did it go? - it all went fine and they they said that it was well organised too, so they felt safe both whilst having it, and being kept socially-distanced from other people.

So it gave us all a bit of a lift when we heard about it, some good news.

Wishing you all the best,

G&R

Spoke to an old school friend's dad today who had his 1st shot 3 days ago. He said the vaccination centre was well organised and although he'd had the minor discomfort of feeling a bit achy all over and a slightly raised temp for around 48hrs afterwards it was absolutely worth it.

Looks like over 80's are being offered it here. Neighbour rung up and was told to go the sports centre in Grantham, 15 miles away. She asked where it was and has been offered a jab at home. Not much disabled parking at the sports hall, so not really the best place for the elderly.

I play Hay Day on my phone so chat to people around the world. 1 lady in Brazil says that New Year celebrations cancelled and that people are not happy. Told her we have 1st vaccine in use and that next 2 due to be oked. She does wonder how long it will be before she gets it.

If someone reacts like Mr Dog said, should this be reported online somewhere? Trials were much smaller, so any info would help.

If you have any problems with medications of any kind you should tell your GP who will report it on.

If you report on the C-19 Symptom study app they will have a system to report on after vaccination.

It's a perfectly normal reaction to the vaccine and was seen many times during the trials (I've seen reports of volunteers suffering what they described as a 36 hour hangover). My friend's dad said he was told not to be surprised or alarmed if he got any of those symptoms but to contact his GP for anything more than a bit of discomfort and longer lasting effects (more than a couple of days).

Many people get these reactions to the flu vaccine and other jabs. They're what happens when the body commits to supporting the immune system's response over things like temperature regulation and other day to day functions.

My doctor’s practise got their first round of jabs on Tuesday.   I only know because a friend of a friend works there.

They had the flu jabs organised like a military operation over the autumn, so I’m expecting them to do the same with the COVID ones pretty soon and start calling people in.

Probably not  :(

All the people working in health care are heroes for the way they have consistently put themselves in harms way and risked getting ill. Anyone moaning about restrictions needs to remember people like your son in law, who have to come and look after them if they do get sick.

I’m glad he recovered and I hope the injection doesn’t make him feel too bad.  Not great timing, but hopefully he is a bit safer now and even more so after the 2nd jab   :)

I had the Oxford jab here in Oxford on Saturday, at 1pm. Didn't even feel it go in. At 3am Sunday when I woke I was freezing cold, uncontrollable shivering and comically extravagant teeth chatterig. This continued till I finally fell asleep again. Next waking at 6am, very hot burning face.  These symptoms all gone during the day, though I find myself very reluctant to go out into the gale force freezing wind to check the allotment.....

We had our jabs - no side effects yet although a strange urge for bananas and a desire to invade Poland has overtaken me!
I joked about the monkey thing with the nurse who said that was why we had to remain for 15 minutes so they could film the transformation.
The jabs were done in a Nightingale hospital - scary to think it could have been full of desperately ill people on oxygen rather than crusties shuffling to the needles. Amazing what we can do when we have to

Yay - great news  :D

I had mine last week.  I had a slightly stiff arm for a day and was a bit headachy the next day, but otherwise all good.  I hope you are feeling OK.  It seems to be a lottery as to whether you get side effects or not, but given the alternative, nothing to worry about  ;)

Mine was at our local football stadium and they had it so well organised.  They parked everyone in blocks, then sent in sections of the car park in turn.  Once in it, was pretty free flowing and I was out again in no time   :)

It was pretty tough convincing them I was old enough :)
Seriously, they're still pushing ahead at a fast pace. We had ours in the emergency hospital, thankfully never needed, but the local doctor has taken over the village hall and there are pharmacies jabbing away. All supported by cheerful, helpful young and not so young volunteers.
I noticed the same nurse who gave us our first shots was there, but she didn't recognise me. Probably the mask confused her!

It's really ramping up in the USA - they'll be ahead of us in the UK soon for jabs per 100 people, which is fine. Once the USA has got their own people done, I reckon they'll be pumping vaccines out to a desperate world in the quantities needed.

Had my second vaccination today.   :D

It didn’t hurt a bit but I tripped up the kerb on my way in and grazed my hand.  It was embarrassment that hurt the most

My wife had hers last Thursday (Worcester are ahead of the curve in terms of the age brackets they're now vaccinating). She had the dead arm effect and was tired on the Friday but that was it.

Had my 2nd jab (Pfizer) at 11:50 this morning. Today being exactly 11 weeks since my 1st jab. Upper arm now feeling a bit sore. Very similar to 11 weeks ago. Nothing to shout about anymore. I'm just one of 10 million + who have now had their 2nd jab. What a fantastic achievement. Thank you to all those unsung heroes who have made this situation possible.

We were seen to at Headcorn Aerodrome on Sunday, and the organisation was superb, with lots of happy banter, and a general feeling of goodwill all round!

GB has led the way to do this huge operation, and everyone I speak to thinks that we're fortunate in having the process so well organised!

Sounds a bit smug, I know, but when we have a flag, then wave it, like we will tomorrow on St Georges Day!

Strange, but I __ALSO__ have a craving for bananas, and can't stop thinking about invading Poland!  But, I'm happy to report that neither urge is any worse than they were three years ago.

Yes, we've done a good brilliant job on the vaccines. We've also saved many lives across the world by finding treatments that help improve outcomes for those who get ill. And today the Oxford team have announced a new vaccine that's very effective against Malaria that kills half a million people a year and lays 200 million ill. Son-in-law has had his jab a few days ago. Wales seems to be doing anyone over 18 now which is great. A different approach to England that seems to be still working on smaller age bands. Obviously Wales has a smaller population and more rural population so that may be why they're doing it that way. They've jabbed 41%+ of the 30-39 group and 21%+ of the 18 to 29 group so far.

We know that older children can get Covid and, even if they don't get ill often, spread it so that vaccinating the over 12s seems a very sensible move.
Quite when to stop social distancing etc. is complex but since the USA is still a little behind us on the vaccine front, my feeling is that it's far too early.
Without being political, our government has done a top job on vaccinations but I think we've consistently been slow to go into lockdown and the foreign travel situation is just incredible. When people came back from India after travel there was restricted via Turkey to avoid quarantine hotel it was no surprise the 'India variant' got a foothold.
Hopefully next year's enquiry into the handling of things will look at what was done so lessons can be learned rather than a political point scoring competition. Pigs might fly.

We've got friends in France we'd like to see and a winter holiday in the sunny Canaries would be smashing but not this year. Hopefully sometime but we've wonderful places to visit just around home until then.
Mark Drakeford has asked the people of Wales not to go abroad - even to green list countries. He's also made it clear he'll lockdown again and close the border to England if need be. He comes over like a headmaster with quiet authority. I think the journalists live in fear here of being made to write 200 times "I must not ask stupid questions that have already been covered in the briefing" :)

I wish that was the rule for all of them   I might even be able to start watching the news again  ::)

As for travel restrictions,  I am afraid they have always been open to abuse, if you are prepared to lie and cheat.   We had someone at work last year come back from a red country via a green one.   They got stopped by border patrol here in the UK who were speaking to  everyone on the flight.  Maybe they pegged it as a connecting one likely to containing rule dodgers.  Anyway a few stern questions got the truth out of them and they were told in no uncertain terms they had to isolate.

The vast majority of people have done their best to act responsibly throughout all of this and have been incredibly tolerant of huge amounts of government interference in our daily lives.  It only takes a few idiots though ...  It is pure selfishness, but then humans are quite good at that at times.

Here in Wales over 60% of the 30-39 group have had their vaccination and over 40% of the 18-29 group. The rest of the adults are in the 80% + range. So the question may be better posed as 'do you know anyone who hasn't had their jab?'

The TB one made all the difference where I used to live in East London. We had a big TB hospital, where you could see people in beds on the tiers of outside balconies. Within a few years of people being vaccinated it was closed  :)

Had my first one midday today. Having to drive to Sandown Park (26 miles) was a pain but once there it was very well organised, from the parking to being guided through. Normally I am nervous when about to be jabbed because needles frequently hurt far more than they should (the worst felt like I'd been stabbed). The lady jabbing me seemed to know what she was doing, it was one of the least painful jabs I'd ever had, just felt like a little scratch. Felt fatigue and had a hot flush shortly after but it eased after 10 minutes.

Long discussion with 11 year old granddaughter over jabs for kids.

She has insisted on wearing a mask since the start because  'the more people that do the sooner she can have as many hugs as she wants'.  She thinks everyone should have a jab before they start secondary school which means this summer/autumn for her.  Her plan is for the first one to be done before the end of the summer term and the second on the first day of the autumn term.  In her mind it makes perfect sense.

Now that 'variants' have become a political football, the issue is not helped over here, so I suppose it'll be much worse in larger countries.

Nobody seems to consider that such 'variants' might be an easier, less unpleasant virus. I'm just glad we haven't had flu this year, because that really does hurt! If they add a covid jab to the normal Autumn list, I'll be first in the queue (actually Mrs Growster will, but that's chivalry for you)!

I suppose the ideal would be a highly infectious virus that didn't make you ill but made you immune to the 'nasty' virus. I'm out of my depth but suspect that's impossible as the act of reproducing damages the host?

Bit of good news - here in Wales they expect every adult to have been offered a first jab within the next couple of weeks. Uptake levels are pretty good
https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/public.health.wales.health.protection/viz/RapidCOVID-19virology-Public/Headlinesummary  click on the vaccination tab for details
It's sobering that we may have everyone who will done (not just offered) in 6 weeks but that's 9 weeks for a decent level of protection and say 21 weeks for maximum after 2nd dose, which takes us into late October. Pushing the 2nd doses ahead earlier may be counter productive as it may slightly reduce efficacy - makes me glad I'm not in charge and trying to balance all these risk / benefits.

The older demographic are the people most likely to have been vaccinated, though, according to the data analysis, because the UK is prioritising those, and we haven't started vaccinating people under 30 yet.

As of yesterday we have 45.6% of the population of the UK fully vaccinated and 73.3% have had the prime vaccination. There is data showing that extending from 3 weeks to 12 weeks actually improved long term efficacy.

I have my 2nd one next week.  I could have pulled it forward but I was too busy this week to do that.  It is good to know that waiting between doses is actually better  :D

I go to my local football stadium and it is an amazing set-up.  You turn up for your time slot, they park you in batches around the car park and then you get sent to the entrance and moved through the whole process within 15 minutes or so.  There are hundreds of people streaming in and out of there and it is organised like a well planned military operation, but with a friendly welcome from all involved in marshalling you around  :)

Brilliant idea!   . . . Except I'm already fully vaccinated

Here is the real problem with Georgia's 30%. The USA, and all 50 states plus territories, has had an ample supply of vaccine for months now. We are even making vaccine available to 12-year olds and up in many states.

However, a sizeable part of the population has been convinced to believe the virus is a hoax, or not dangerous/responsible for 500,000+ deaths. Alternatively they have been convinced the vaccine is worse because Bill Gates will inject a microchip into you, or it will make you become autistic, or gay, or is a means to experiment on you (or fill in the blank with other nonsense). This is more prevalent in some of our southern, or western, or midwestern states (these false beliefs are less common in west coast, east coast, or large metropolitan areas).

When vaccine became widely available to states, the governor of Georgia initially decided to send most of the vaccine to rural areas (the regions that elected him; also places that strongly hold the above beliefs and don't want the vaccine). Less vaccine was made available in areas that did NOT vote for him, like Atlanta (forcing people that wanted the vaccine to travel an hour or two to a rural place where vaccine was available; that was me!!).

Under pressure, the availability and distribution issues in Georgia have improved, but we are far behind other states, on average.
