Hellebores care - advice please
« on: March 06, 2013, 07:18 »
Hi,

I ordered some hellebores plants on a special offer (6 for £6) which duly arrived and was potted up as per the instructions. The instructions also said to keep them at 10 - 15 degrees in temperature so I kept them indoors and they seemed to be fine. Then I moved them into the greenhouse and they are not so fine....did I move them too quickly? Any ideas on what I  need to do to make them better?

Thank you,

Caroline

Hellebores are very tough so I am surprised you were told to keep them so warm.

I expect they drooped in the greenhouse, as a sharp drop in temperature does that to them. Altrntaively they could have got far to hot if the sun was shining

I would put them outside in a sheltered spot, make sure the pots do not freeze solid and they do not dry out and they should be just fine.

Hope that helps

Hellebores are pretty damn tough plants.

As suggested I would keep them somewhere sheltered for a week or so for them to aclimatise then get them in the ground, where they'll be happiest.

Good luck!

Once their temperature has stabilised they should pick up.

I bought my plants as mature plants from a Nat. Trusty garden centre for my shady side of the garden and they have thrived in all weathers and temperatures and among the stems are hundreds of baby hellebores that also just seem to get on with growing! :)

They're certainly not a plant that needs mollycoddling. And they are lovely for deep winter colour - really rewarding plants. :)

This is the last weedy side of the garden, but theres too much going on in this bed to get to it for the moment - terrified of digging up my 2 'bleeding hearts' that are starting to sprout!! :D
I've had them for over a decade and I like them to be established before digging around!

I love the dark coloured and the white hellebore best, although I think the pure white is taking a bit of colour from the dark purple ones as they have had a pinky bloom for the last couple of years! ::)
