Somewhere cold, but not freezing, this will discourage chitting for a while.

Come January you can start chitting them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine came yesterday.  I hate that they are sent so early!  I have put them in the shed until after Christmas.

Put them somewhere cool but where they will not get frosted. In the dark does not matter at this stage so a garage is fine.

About 6 weeks before expected planting date bring them into the warm for about a week or so until you can see buds starting. Some varieties will do this quicker than others. Once you can see chits put them in a cool and light place until planting. A widow cill away from radiators is where I put mine, but a shed window or unheated greenhouse is OK if you remember to cover them or bring them in if frost is threatened.

Can't use the garage because we get mice in  :(  I usually use a windowsill in a cool room, but this is sooo early i think the sprouts will be enormous - can i knock off a few of the really big ones so they don't go mouldy?

They need to be kept really cool so that they do not start too soon. Rubbing off sprouts will make no difference and the life timeclock of the potato will have started ticking.

The mice will not get them if you hang them in a bag by a string.

Mine came today.

Came back from town and thought why is greenhouse shut   i was sure i'd opened it before i went out!

Went to reopen it and there were potatoes..........thanks postie. If he'd taken them back who knows when i would have got them.....or if!
Mind you there was no card through the letterbox saying what he'd done.
that might have been asking for too much i suppose.

So mine are in the shed as well :(

Salmo - sorry to be thick - I take it you mean a net or string bag so the air can get to them? I'll hav eto save some satsuma nets i think as I don't have  a string bag as such

I shall wander down to the local nursery and purchase mine in January  :D  They have an enormous selection, tho I only really grow PJ's and Romano's.

Could I leave mine in the boxes that they came in and put them on a shelf in the garage? (I dont think we get mice in there).

Or do  I have to hang them on a rafter in a string net?

(I'd rather leave them in the box, but I'm confuddled)  :?

well i've left mine in box as i think that light will make them sprout. they're in outside loo so they're cold (but frost free) and in dark.
I'm no expert but sure this is right, it's same as burying them...cold and dark.

When they're talking about hanging in net bags think they mean whole package inside net bag just to stop mice.

Cool is the key at the moment, but once they start to sprout they'll need cool AND light, otherwise you'll get long, drawn and weak chits.

Mine go in the greenhouse that has just enough heat to keep the frost off.
