Over Wintering 'Japanese' Onions.
« on: September 23, 2010, 19:43 »
I planted some of these on Sunday and I feel quite excited.  I got a kilo for six quid in my local garden centre and haven't even used half of them.  They've gone where my fairly successful 1st attempt at caulis went.  They're not supposed to be ready now til May or June next year and I've planted them so if you get on your hands and knees and look really really closely at the ground, you can just make out the tops coming through the soil.

Has anyone else had a go at doing these yet?  I'me a bit worried the soil is a bit compressed around them as I was kneeling on a board to plant them!

I grew some for the first time last year and was pleased in that almost non of them went to seed while a fair number of my spring planted red onions did. Be aware that they dont keep as well as normal onions, the idea is to sow some to help tide you over until the spring planted ones are ready in Aug/ Sept. Start eating them as soon as they are big enough to bother with - I think some of mine were an eatable size by the end of May. I used the last of my reds today to make 4 jars of red onion chutney. - Enjoy!
Its nice to see something growning over the winter along with the garlic. I have mine ready to plant but am just a bit busy at the moment.

Won't be trying overwintering onions this year as the both varieties we planted last winter bolted leaving us with none!

Are there any allotment associations near you B and B?, some of them have their own shops for buying allotment products. I bought one pound of white onion sets for £1.40 on Sunday, roughly that's £3.10 per kilo. Makes a big difference if your buying lots of seeds etc.

ps. if my maths is out then I apologise in advance  :D

What you have to remember about Japanese onions is that the storing properties are not as good as spring planted ones.

If you plant 100's you have to be sure you can use them in about 3 months or so. The few I've got left from a June harvest are going off now.

I did some this year, but I think along with normal Onion sets I might be giving them a miss next year. I only have a half allotment and for the prices in a supermarket I am not sure they are worth the space.  Garlic on the other hand.  :)

I was given some garlic bulbs, so am trying (although I don't hold out too much hope this far north).

Why ever not?

Many varieties originated in Siberia. Garlic needs a cold spell in order to divide into cloves.

The Really Garlicky company are based in Nairn, not much further south than yourself.

People associate garlic with warmer climes like the Mediterranian, but this is not the case.
