Moving strawberry patch
« on: October 19, 2013, 17:49 »
Hi

My strawberry patch was really good this year but is getting swamped by couch grass.  So I want to dig it up, get rid of the grass and thistles and replant it.  It's been in this position for 2 years.  When is the best time of year to do this and should I do anything special to the soil when replanting the strawberries??  I do plan to add some compost etc before planting but is there any thing else?  I was also thinking of moving it to another patch so I can really get rid of the grass.

any advice would be welcome

thanks Lulu

My neighbour at the allotment usually starts digging them up potting them up in November and covers them replanting in the spring.

I find that established strawberry plants don't move too well and given the three year guideline, they've only got another year before production tails off.

I'd be inclined to start a new patch with runners and give yourself a good three years.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

why not put them where potatoes have been..

Because there will be a higher chance of the fungus causing verticillium wilt occuring in the soil.

Like lulu, I planned to move this year's runners to a new area so next year I can clear the patch of the then 4 year old plants after fruiting. But as Dave says, it's a lot of bother really so I'll just ready a new bed and buy fresh plants in spring.

After fruiting, the old bed will be carefully dug up to hand pull the tangle of couch roots and other problems.

Ooo didn't know about the potato patch, thanks for that  :)

nice to hear from DD (been wondering where he's been) and the advice given follows what others have said.  So will leave them in their grass jungle for another year but start getting runners for moving next year.

Thanks everyone Lulu :)

I'm building beds lifted off the floor for mine at present. Sick of them being eaten.

I'm incorporating netting in the design.

Agree with the rest the old spud bed isnt a great idea.
