Any suggestions for what to use a piece of pipe for?
« on: January 27, 2012, 18:15 »
We're all as bad as each other for keeping things that will come in handy for something but I've got a piece of pipe I kept that I don't know where I got it from or what I kept it for so I'm open to suggestions!

It's a black pipe thats 6 inches in diameter inside and 30 inches long, the inside is smooth and it's ridged on the outside and it's really sturdy.

I was wondering if I could cut holes in it with the hole saw on the drill, stand it upright and plant something like strawberries in it?  ..... anyone got any other ideas 'coz you'll understand that it might be very useful so I can't throw it out! ::)

JOhn has a good sugestion in one of his books (cant remember which).

If you block off one end with concrete - he says how to do it - you can use it for dipping the ends of wooden post and stakes into wood preservative to stop them from rotting in the ground.

All my posts are them concrete ones with slot in fence panels Sally  :(

....but that is a really good idea to soak them through rather than painting them!

I meant all the stakes, posts and poles that you use for peas, beans, brassicas, fruit cages etc.

After a mooch about in the garage I reckon one of the best things I've got that I could use for dunking thin stakes in wood preserve would be the tubes that you keep fishing poles in, they have caps on the ends that fit really well and it would be very easy to seal them to keep them water tight. I've got quite a few empty ones hanging about ;)

.... I've also found an old fish tank heater and a small tank so I'm just considering building a little heated propagator, it's amazing what you can find when you're not really looking for anything in particular or alternative uses for things!  :)

Be careful with the fish tank heater purple pixie

Many of them need to actually be fully submerged so that they do not overheat and then crack the glass case

Oooo, forgot about that! .... I found the lights as well and a cover to go over them and they chuck off a fair bit of heat as well!

Mmmmm.... comfrey  :)

I was going to suggest comfrey too. Seal one end with something with a small hole in it, stand a bottle under it, fill it with comfrey leaves, then put a loose fitting top on. Concentrated comfrey liquid.
