« on: July 07, 2007, 10:08 »
Hello again, ok so heres this weeks problem, I have 2 cucumbers on the bottom of my plant that are around 4-5 inches long and quite fat, but the baby cucumbers growing further up keep shriveling up and withering, I water everyday and feed once a week, what am I doing wrong.
First year growing, so far, so good.

The plant may be under stress with the bad weather recently.  Suggest feed with nitogen fertiliser e.g. a nettle tree.  Top dress around base of stem with a little compost to allow more surface roots to grow.  Water away from the stem and hardly at all in wet weather.  Cut off and destroy any leaves which look unhealthy.  Examine stem for any signs of mould and treat with sulphur powder.  Examine under leaves for signs of aphid activity and remove by hand as cucs are fussy about insecticides.
From fork to fork

Two of my three have died. We have been away for a couple of months and there seems to have been too much rain. I don't feed them but the yellow leaves could be helped with a little nitrogen.
Perhaps it could be poor drainage/too much water - agree about watering away from the stem.

all good advice above +

pick and eat the two cucumbers that are ready (even if they are small), then the plants are free to concentrate their efforts into producing more for you.

I think the weather has been tricky for most people's cucumbers so far because of all the rain, grey skies and lack of sunshine.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
