Can I move this fruit bush?
« on: June 04, 2015, 08:33 »
Having found a sprawling jostaberry bush on a wild allotment that we've just taken on - I've decided to keep the thing to see what the fruit tastes like. But - it's in the wrong place - of course it is!
It's a bit of a monster, but will I harm it if I move it? Should I wait until after the summer? Would rather not, but will if I have to. Any advice?  :nowink:
Carpe Diem

If you want to keep it it will be best moved in winter when it is dormant. To help it refind its feet, dig in a circle around the plant and get out as much of the rootball intact as you can. It helps to have 2 people for this and to put the rootball on some plastic sheeting so it can be dragged rather than carried (when roots might fall off). When you replant it, prune it back by about a third to half so the bush isn't trying to sustain all the top growth as well as regrowing the root system. And keep it well watered in the first year.

All of the above. But why not try to take some cuttings.  I only have to put the damn things in a pot and off they go.  At least if moving it doesn't work then you'll have something to replace it. :D
