We have always grown dwarf french beans, trying climbers this year for the first time, when would be best time to sow the seed or is it best to start them off in pots . Do I treat them like runner beans and wait till May ? Any suggestions?

I'd reckon you've got it right.

One suggestion might be to germinate on damp paper towels before sowing direct into final position.   Also see muntjac's tip on a climbing frame to facilitate picking: http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=2100

Thanks WG ,I'll try the damp towel method ,would you put 2-3 seeds per cane ? I looked at the bean frame thread ,may use it for the french beans if I run out of canes after the runner bean frame is up.

Maybe 2 but I'd reckon on pulling out the weakest one.  3 if you have a lot of slugs

Try the variety cobra, you will not be disappointed.Treat exactly the same as runners,i always sow mine in 80mm pots last week of april in a greenhouse, they will be ready to go out early june, this should have seen the last of any threat of frost.
