Title: Climbing French Beans in a greenhouse?
Post by: LivvyW on April 19, 2010, 18:48
Am going to give less space to tomatoes this year, greenhouse space precious, windy
an exposed site.

Would it be worth growing french beans in greenhouse, i mean, would you get a decent crop. French beans have been pretty weak for me outside.

Anyone else do it?

I always do an early crop of cobra in the greenhouse/polytunnel thingy and they crop really well if you keep up with the watering :D

I have a small heated greenhouse (hgh) and a large cold greenhouse (cgh). I started some Cobra in the hgh on 5th March then put 5 in each of two square tubs and grew them on in there until 12th April then moved them to cgh. There are nicely climbing their canes but I am still wrapping them in fleece every night. Last year they gave a really good crop treated this way.
Last year I followed them with a sowing in pots in the hgh on 26th April that I planted in the cgh border but unfortunately I didn't diary the date, they gave a huge crop considering it was only a 5 foot row. Planning to sow them this coming weekend.
I have never had a worthwhile crop of French Beans outside here at 600' although Runners do fine.

I grew some climbing french beans in my cold greenhouse for an early crop last year. They ran up the canes and were quickly at the top, but they made far more greenery than beans (might be because my greenhouse soil is half well rotted manure / half compost heap?) ... anyway, the height was far more than outside and a complete tangle ... so I'm growing Dwarf French Beans in the greenhouse this year for my early crop (I grew some of them in the greenhouse for an Autumn crop last year, but I had left starting them off too late and they didn't fully mature before the cold weather came)
