I've also read somewhere that brussels only take 20 weeks from sowing to harvest if you want them for Christmas? Is this true anybody know  :?:

I was going to make a comment about the writer of that, but thought better of it. (Quickly checks book to make sure it wasn't John. )

My brussels were sown in April. Usually ready a bit before Christmas. Generally reckoned 28-36 weeks depending on variety.

WHY? what did I say?

Not YOU. The writer of whoever said it takes 20 weeks from sowing to harvest!

Yes it was me    but I DID read it somwhere, honest  :(

not you - the author of the book
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Well, here is the information, I got it from a bbc web site at the following link and it definitely states:

Brussel sprouts or Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera, take up to 100 days from seeding to harvesting, so to get your sprouts on Christmas Day you should be sowing seeds in early/mid-September.

Just had a look at my notes. My brussels were actualy sown mid-March. OK so it's warmer at this time of year, but they've been on the go for 17-18 weeks are (fortunately) nowhere near full height yet.

These dates are usually given from planting - as in in planting out plants, not sowing - I wonder if that's the reason.

You can get some winter veg that can be sown upto July but you are really struggling with sprouts, Nipper. This is one I found that you might try it on with nowish still, but September...

Don't forget winter crops don't grow when it gets cold, just stand there!
