Jolly Molly
« on: August 17, 2023, 11:15 »
When I was a kid over 70 years ago in Lancashire, oven gloves were always referred to as jolly mollies in my family. I'd just assumed it was a local pet-name. This morning when doing my weekly laundry, I chucked in the oven gloves as they looked a bit mucky. Having nothing better to do while they went through the wash cycle, I googled "Jolly Molly" and low and behold; Jolly Molly is the brand name of a type of oven glove. At least something has stood the test of time

I grew up on Cheshire then Lancashire and have never heard of a name for them except oven mitts.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You foreign people up north ain't half posh.  In this house you just grab one or two tea towels to get things out the oven.  No need for gloves, mitts or Jolie molies here.  :D
