Best way to use enviromesh!
« on: April 09, 2012, 08:47 »
Hi, I have brought some enviromesh for my brassica raised bed and I have seen a couple of ways people use it. Some lay it over the top of the crops or another way is to support it standing up as a frame around the side of the bed so nothing can get in or jump in from the sides.

Someone old my carrot fly etc cannot jump to high that's why they have put the mesh standing upwards rather than lying it down.

I hope what i have put makes sense, does anyone know which way is best to use this mesh, over the crop of around the crop?

As long as it's secure I don't think it matters how you use it

I have built a wooden frame over some of my raised beds and covered with it
I have also used water pipe to make large cloches
One of the online gardening supplies have a purpose made enviromesh cover which seals up at the  ends by valcro tape and goes over a metal frame. I use this for my cauli's

If you stand it up around the frame the butterflies can still get in and lay their eggs, I use debris netting over frames covering my brassicas and then use enviro mesh over my carrot beds

I have some blue water pipe so I will go with that. Does anyone know how high I will need to make the frame for brassicas?

I use galvanised wire hoops to support the enviromesh because although it's not heavy I don't think carrots are really robust enough to support it properly on their own.

Most important thing is to make sure it is properly pegged or weighted down with no gaps - carrot flies may be poor fliers but they can crawl pretty well!

As tall as the brassica's going to grow - then a few extra inches!

This obviously will vary depending if your brassicas are cabbages or brussels.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You can make cloches taller, using good old blue water pipe, by using longer canes.... useful when things are a bit taller than you expected
