Title: sweetcorn
Post by: diggerwild on August 30, 2011, 17:11
i am growing sweetcorn for the first time and was wondering if the silky tassles that turn brown when ready to harvest need to be completely brown right down to the cob?? mine seem to be brown three quarters of the way down but not changing any more, hope this makes sense!!

Open one up and have a look.  Sounds like they are about ready to me  :D

welcome to the Forum :)

No they don't always go brown all the way down...peel back a few of the outside wrapping leaves and see what the corn looks like. If it's yellowy then stick a nail into a kernal, if the juice inside is milky...then it's ready to eat :)

I'm afraid it is a pollination problem, the weather has not been good for sweetcorn pollination this year, and some of my cobs were like yours :(

Better luck next year..fingers crossed!
