 I am thinking about planting autumn onion sets soon,has any one thought about onions or am i to early?.Lillileaf

Bit early I would say. You could start getting the ground ready but I haven't even seen any sets in the shops yet. I would say Oct/Nov would be ideal time to put sets in. This gives them some time to get some growth on before they set over winter.

I agree with October time for planting - I think if they are planted too early they can go to seed very quickly.

Sown and grown in cooler months is better.

If you are growing overwintering onions from seed, then now is the time to start. You would plant them out in their final positions around October, which is when you would plant sets as others have said.

I always plant mine out in half term week - last week of October - and that works well here. Gives enough time for a decent amount of root growth to see them over the winter but not too much soft top growth.
