Two Little Gem Questions
« on: June 01, 2010, 19:33 »
Thanks in advance

1. I have some quite mature plants but they don't appear to be creating a 'tight' heart (like you'd get in the shops) but more of a loose set of leaves. Are they just a bit young yet or do they need some string around them to tighten them up? I'm sure I read somewhere that this can be done...?

2. The younger seedlings (1-2 inches) are ready to be thinned out. Can the thinnings be carefully re-planted succesfully? Or not worth bothering?

Ta!

Hello Whippersnapper.... although they dont like to be disturbed once planted, I have found if you lift with some soil.. it doesnt do them any harm and can be re-planted successfully...  I did the same with my beets last year and they were the best tasting beets i've ever grown... :D

Expect DavidT will be along shortly to advise, although I suspect he will just identify them as Welsh rare-gits!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Shouldn't worry too much about re-planting or transplanting, I always grow my gems indoors in seed trays and transfer to ground, they don't seem bothered by this.

My little Gems didn't germinate. Must be old seed. Right disappointing as I love the things. Perfect little boat shaped receptacles for mayo  :D

Never heard of stringing them up.  Can I watch  :D
