PEA QUESTIONS
« on: April 27, 2008, 13:32 »
As many of you know I am new to growing veg! I would like to grow peas (kelvendon wonder) which I believe will reach a height of 18inches. Ive read my veggie books and they say "place twiggy pea sticks next to the sown peas".
Okay my questions are I dont have twiggy pea sticks ...what else can I use ?
Can you buy twiggy pea sticks? **I know I know its a strange question**

i normally just put a row of small canes and then lace them together to make a string fence. plant peas next to the canes ,the peas grab hold of canes and string ... seems to do the trick. :D
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

I use some of the plastic mesh.  The ridged stuff with about 2" square mesh.  I just support it down the centre of the row with some canes woven through it, like a mesh fence.

I have a pea net from Wilko's.

I was going to grow them up an old iron gate that we found on our plot. I've not got it into position in time though and the thought of moving it each year seems a bit silly really so I will use the gate for something else I think.

The twiggy pea sticks you said are just strong twigs from trees/bushes ect.
I use them, i got some from a tree that was being cut back. You just need to get some long strong twigs from a tree or a walk in the woods and put them all in the ground as if you are puting canes in. Plant your peas next to a twig and they all grow around and up the twigs.

It works and it looks good

This question was asked about 2 weeks ago.

Have a look at this thread - there's even a pretty picture of how I do it.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks everyone that replied!
DD ~~ that picture was great ~just what I needed. I always feel such an idiot when I ask questions about vegetables the thing is I am a novice and quite often dont know what the end result should look like. My peas are actually from B&Q and they dont even tell you how tall the peas grow to !!!!

A picture paints a thousand words!

I'm growing 4 x 32' rows plus as 20' row & 3 types of heritage peas, total 200' - con't find enough twigs for that!

Main crop though is Kelvedon Wonder, they've been my best performers in the past, so you've made a good choice there.
