Hi WG, it is not unfortunately associated to Cawdor village, estate or Castle in the highlands, which is why i guess you asked given your location.  I wish it was as that is a spectacular place from pictures i have seen but not yet visited, been up that way but not that specific locality, it is on my list.

I am afraid the origin of my forum name is infinitely less interesting than that, i used to live on a street called Cawdor when i lived in St Neots near Cambridge and adopted it as my user name so i could more easily remember it as i am always forgetting user names/passwords etc.

I envy what you have on your doorstep

Cawdor
Used to be indecisive, now i'm not so sure...

Indeed you have sussed the reason for my question.  :D   I drive past Cawdor once a week.  I wondered if you might have some local connections.

Hi MW,

Joan J are a lovely autumn fruiting rasp. The canes that grow in the spring will produce a crop next summer and if the soil is well pepared you should get a nice crop. At the end of their fruiting season chop the canes right back, as Joan J crop on the same years canes, fertilise the soil and just wiat for more large juicy tasty rasps

Hooray, all the canes are in! Good soil which was topped off with some well-rotted horse manure 3 weeks ago. I soaked the canes in a bucket of tepid water for an hour before planting. The little booklet that came with them said to soak for a 'few hours' but, having read lots of raspberry advice on previous posts, I opted to the shorter time for fear of drowning the poor things! Now I just have to wait till 2009 for a really bumper crop by the sounds of it  :)

Because that's what it said in the little booklet that came with the canes from Suttons. I've no idea why though  :?

Fair enough - good answer.   :)

New one on me though. I'd have thought it a bad idea to do anything which might break their winter dormancy.

They all come with that. I donno why. It is also said to pour boiling water down the planting whole. I can't remember what that is for either.

You surely won't be surprised I never bothered.

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
