Field peas and beans for green manure
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:27 »
I was thinking about sowing these over a rather heavy, wet 60m sq area that had potatoes last year in the next week or so.  i think I will need about half a kilo.

The best deals I can see are tuckers (£9.50 inc p&p) for beans or sowgreenmanure (£9.40 inc p&p) for peas.  A tenner for something to dig in ...

Anyone know of a) a better deal or b) have an option if it is money well spent?

I bought a kg of forage peas from Moles Seeds a few weeks back for £2.70 but the sting in the tail is the £3.95p p&p (peas and beans and green manures are considered chargeable items - do check their p&p weight price list too in case you go overboard and buy several kgs!!   ;)) but if you want to buy other seeds, it's worth doing it at the same time.  This is my first year of trying out green manure but I'm beginning to wonder if I should have got more now ....

We are relatively cold here because we are that bit higher and catch the wind so I thought I was too late for tares?  That they had to be in by mid September?

Moles!  I had forgotten to check them ....  The p&p on beans is always a kicker but I have left it too late it seems to buy locally.   :(  Unless anyone knows differently

I had the same issue when buying green manure earlier in the year- couldn't find anywhere that seems to be a good deal- so I bough enought to do me a few years online (to spread out the p+p)
It does seem horribly expensive for something that just gets dug in!!

I've sown clover in my paths and am going to allow it to go to seed, so I can collect it and I can increase my seed count, but its all a bit fiddly!

I just bought 6kg of tares from a wholesale agricultural/pet food warehouse nearby, they only cost £2.93.

At the start of the year I grew peas for pea tops from boxes of marrowfat peas. They were really cheap and you can pick them up from any supermarket- would these be suitable as a green manure? It might be too late for them now?

I investigated the tares and came to the conclusion that, since we are a bit cold here, it was late in the season to get them in here.

In the end I bought 2.5kgs (two years supply) of forage peas from Moles - by far and away the best buy even considering the steep p&p, plus some other seeds   They were very quick off the mark which was great (10/10 for customer service - absolutely spot on), so they arrived Saturday and were planted in the lovely weather on sunday.   :)  Now it is up to the weather ....  but they have had a warm damp start so heres hoping they do their thing!

I've just bought a kilo of green manure (sorry I'm at work, and can't remember which I've bought).  I've ordered it from Kings (via the Allotment) at £9.50.  Its my first attempt and I bought it because I can sow it in October/November for digging in in early Spring.  Anyway, does anyone out there know of anywhere in Manchester I can buy it for next year?
