Sweetcorn... again...
« on: April 27, 2009, 16:19 »
Hi,

I have been reading the various posts on sweetcorn with a lot of interest, never having grown it before. What I couldn't find was a fairly basic 'how to' on the chitting side...

Is it damp kitchen towel, placcy bag, warm and light?

I put mine in a washed out butter tub, lid losely on, and placed the seeds on some wet kitchen towel.  I forgot about them, and 5 days later I had huge roots, and huge shoots!

But they are in the ground now and very very strong and thick and green!

This is them 5 days after chitting and before I put them in the ground.

I chitted mine only the other day Scabs, using Johns method- ish... damp kitchen towel in a tray seeds on top, another piece of kitchen towel on top...wrapped the tray in cling film to stop it drying out and then put it in the airing cupboard in between some towels so it's dark and  warm...two day's later 100% had chitted... :D

I do not have one either, I left the butter tub (loose lid) on top of my Bread bin, as the kitchen is the warmest room in our house.

Mine are normally about 4-6" high when I put them out at the start of June
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

our sweetcorn seeds are placed in a 3" pot of compost,

covered with 1/2 inch of compost,

watered once each week , subject to weather and drying out ,

once they reach 9-10 inches we plant them out in cold frame for 3-4 days to harden off

then planted out in blocks ,

we are growing 7 x 8 rows of corn ,

each plant being a foot from the next

each row being 1 foot away from the next

Thats exactly wat it means.  Take them out during the day and bring them in at night. When its warmer you can leave them outside all the time and then plant out
