Butternut - to plant out or not to plant out?
« on: May 13, 2007, 12:38 »
I've had some advice to keep my butternut in the greenhouse as they'll do better there than in the plot? The trouble is, my greenhouse isn't very big, and what with my tomatoes and cucumbers and the fact it's only 5 feet tall, I'm wondering if there will be space for it?

Any advice on growing the butternuts would be appreciated - Mine have got about 5 leaves atm, and are about 8" high. Do they grow up a trellis? I'd have thought the fruits were too heavy for that?

thanks.
trying to be organic...

I grew 4 Waltham butternut last year and they took over the plot. I would guess that each one covered an area about 15 feet in diameter. Label said the fruits would be 3-4 lb, but mine were 7-12lb! That's a whole lot bigger than the ones you see in the supermarket, so maybe there are other varieties. I would suspect a trellis would collapse.

I`m jealous,I cannot get butternut to germinate! If I could I would plant outside unless I had a hugh greenhouse. We had a good year for squash last year and you would probably get a longer growing season in the greenhouse but the do take up a lot of space. The only squash I have grown up a trellis is spaghetti squash which headed off on it`s own and needed no support.

i grew 2 palnts of 'cobnut squash' a butternut type last yr in the open in northumberland, they took up over 1m sq each sprawling about and i got 2 fruits from each bush, would think they would be too big for green house, good luck

They do grow to a big plant so i would put them out, but a week or two yet, I have risked five out but they look sick. They are six foot apart in each direction.

I have this variety... at 2 leaf stage.  I'll plant out in a bit!

i'm trying them for the first time this year - and they are already in the hot bed.

don't know what variety they are though - i saved the seeds from a tasty one i got given last year.

i don't think you'll be too late to make a sowing little sweetpeas - i predict a long growing season this year

Thanks splodger

I've got a load of manure being delivered on thursday and as well as that i've got a large chunk of the plot under cover as i didn't think i would plant enough stuff to need the space.

As it still needs clearing could I make use of this area for the squash and pumkins,  the area is about 3 metres by 8 metres
