IBC cages for compost bins
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:21 »
I have got hold of 2 ibc cages from work for free and im planning on using them as compost bins. Im thinking of cladding them with old pallet wood to reduce the size of the gaps. Im new to allotments and i realy dont have a clue, do you think this will work? what size gaps should i leave for air flow into the compost bin?

Make the compost bins entirely from pallets and cover the ibc cages in bird or butterfly netting to protect fruit and veg ?

They'll be the sturdiest compost bins around if you're making them out of IBC cages!  However...access may be an issue, I've always found that I need access from the ground level, so I use pallets and leave the front one hinged so I can open to get the barrow in, or give it a good stir!

I like the fruit cages idea, or what about covering with polythene to form a sort of cold frame/cloche.

Of course, if you still had the IBC inside the cage, they make cracking water butts!

 I got the idea from this youtube clip
JYUAXfVQFfMfeature=BF&playnext=1&list=QL&index=2

But thought why bother removing the cage when they would make good walls anyway. I thought i would cut out the front section with a hacksaw to make some sort of door.
I do love the fruit cage idea though and i think i will go with that.
They would make great water butts but i wouldnt be too sure how well i could clean them and the chemicals we store in them are very nasty.
Hopefully i can get more than the 2 i have stored away so i can make both ideas :)
