I'm interested in this and wondered what the response on here would be?  I have read around on the internet about this and there seems to be varying opinions.  My hens now freerange around the garden and lay their eggs in the bush - all three of them use the same one in the same place!  With the weather we have had the eggs are a little muddy when I collect them, not really bad, just a bit.  It will be Christmas soon and I would like to put some eggs in my hampers, but should I give them with muddy streaks (which could be confused for something else!) or do I give them a wipe?

Dry rub or brush; don't wet.

If it's mud I leave it. If it's poo I wipe it but mark the egg with a W so I know to use them first.

I wash them if they are very bad, just so the mud or poo doesn't sprinkle into the egg when I crack it.
