Celeriac
« on: January 22, 2010, 19:00 »
Hi

I am going to try growing some celeriac in cells for my sister (a pressie for her lottie).

The seeds are tiny, so my question is,

Do I surface sow or Cover the seeds ?
When is best to sow ? As different places say different things from Feb/March/April.

Any help or tips appreciated, many thanks, Spottymint. :)

Right or wrong - this is how I do it.

Sow thinly, (almost impossible) on surface of compost in a pot or seed tray. (March).

When large enough to handle thin out into individual pots or modules, grow on, harden off, plant out.

I've seen a couple of places where it says to sow two seeds in a pot. But if you've eyesight like mine & 10 thumbs, this is TOTALLY impossible!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi

Many thanks DD, good to get some advice from an experienced grower.  I shall follow your advice.

I know what you mean about the seeds, I expected them to be big (considering the size of celeriac), but I had to blink when I saw them !

Many thanks again.
Spottymint.

last year I was advised to sow the seeds very early (late January/early February) because they germinate and grow so slowly. However I'm not sure that it made much difference to their eventual size, but maybe slightly.

Hi Strangerachael,

That is what 1 of the books was saying, sow early (Febuary) as slow growing and need time to swell before the cold winter weather sets in.

Can't handle frost while young, but seems mature plants can.

That opens up the question, sow early or not ?

Maybe try both ?

Thanks for the reply, Spottymint.  :)

Don't forget, if you sow too early, you got to have somewhere to keep them before you can plant them out.

2008 - frosts at the end of May - remember?

I have an unheated conservatory, so they will be safe if I sow too early, it's the O/H I have to watch out for ! Men can't half whinge ! :tongue2: :

Binned all my toms last year as he whinged, I lose out to a fish pond, a wildlife pond and a barrel of water & yet I have to tolerate his frogs !
