Lean to greenhouse
« on: April 28, 2012, 11:11 »
Hi all
Im new to this so please bear with me,im planning on building a 8ft x 6ft lean to
greenhouse on the end of an outbuilding, this is the only place feasable as the wind here is terrible, but the only problem is by 2pm the sun as moved around and it will be in the shade, will this efect growing the likes of tomatoes and chillies,is it the sun or the heat that they require?

Mine is in shade from about 3 in the afternoon and I find I need to get my toms in a bit earlier and feed them lots.  Basically if you can make them happy and get a long enough growing season you'll be fine.  We had stacks of toms from 7 plants last year.

My home grown ones are about 7 inches tall now and in 15cm posts.  That will be the las pot before they go in the grow bags which is the final position.

I built my lean to out of recycled odds and sods.  The main windows are 2 hugh double glazed patio doors.  The rest is odd windows and twin wall - the twin wall is 10mm stuff though for better heat retention.

If it's a brick outbuilding the wall will absorb a lot of heat to keep it warm enough for them in the afternoon  ;)

I have the same problem, I believe light is not needed as much. The chillies and tomatoes will do well due to the extra heat the greenhouse provides. Also morning sunlight is better for plants than afternoon sunlight.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for that nuzuki thats the answer i was hoping for.
The heat of the sun will heat it up all morning then be in the shade on the
afternoon,if we ever see any sun.
I will crack on with the build now
