Swiss chard bolted
« on: June 27, 2009, 20:06 »
My first sowing of Swiss chard (one week into April) germinated in 2 weeks but every plant bolted as it grew. I don't know about the second sowing yet.

I had no problem the last 2 years when I grew 'Fordhook Giant'. This year I am growing 'Rhubarb'. Does anyone else have experience of this?

Yeah, one of my chard plants (oriole) has bolted and I'm concerned about the rest. My Swiss chard last year didn't bolt at all. It kept growing and growing leaves until I yanked it out.

It's weird that they've all bolted like that though. I was under the impression that you could grow chard the whole summer through without having to make seasonal sowings like with spinach. We have had some dramatic fluctuations in temperature this year though so that could be a a factor. I'd sow some more if I were you!

3 out of 12 in a row have bolted - interestingly, they'e all at the end of a row, whereas the ones in the middle have had some more shade which may have helped. I'm hoping the rest will be OK, I planted them because I often have problems with spinach bolting and thought chard would be OK!
Ain't Nature wonderful!
