Title: Chicken hayfever!
Post by: Amy Louise on April 02, 2012, 11:53
I have a Rhode Island Red who is about 6-7months old, she has recently developed a sneeze which happens quite a few times a day since the pollen levels are high, she hasn't got a runny nose, her eyes and comb are perfectly fine, she's laying, eating, running around as normal wondered if this could be hayfever?? Any suggestions/experiences please!!!

I would say it is more likely to be a respiratory infection  :(

Very well could be respiratory, but if she is fine otherwise, I wouldn't rule out something like hayfever.

I had a Rhode Island Red who sneezed every summer, but never in the winter.  She was a really healthy bird otherwise.  I'm sure she had hayfever

I used to buy her allergy tablets.  One would see her right for several weeks.  I know we are not supposed to give the chooks human tablets, but my vet said they wouldn't harm her.

Thank you!! She seems fine otherwise. May give the tablets a go and just keep an eye on her.  :D x

Another possibility, if the ground is as dry with you as it is here is dust. One of mine sometimes neezes after a dustbath when the earth is so dry.
