I've been viewing this site for almost a year since taking on my allotment and finally decided it was time to take the plunge into the forums!
As well as my allotment i have begun to homebrew. Pretty sure i will mainly be sticking to beer as it seems the best one for good results. I made a batch over the last week and have bottled it in glass ale bottles for a good look, however with the smaller volume these hold and the faff of getting the labels off etc i am looking for a different type of bottle to use. Lots of people have said to use old fizzy drinks bottles, but some people say not to. Any thoughts either way?
Hope this is the first of many posts for me!
Thanks.

My favourites were the flip-top beer bottles as used by Grolsch and others. Beer is pricey though if you have to buy them full.

If we have been short of bottles OH has used the 2 litre lemonade bottles.

Regretably you've then gotta drink the homebrew 2 litres at a time. Shame!

Keeps quite well in the fridge for a day or two once opened

Best bet is Magners Cider bottles they are full pint and get chucked away by the thousands . Have a word with local sports clubs that have a bar, restraunts, pubs and just keep alook out around recycling sites catch 'em before they get dumped. If they are in a dumpster Long stick (cane) witha plastic tube on push into bottle lift bottle out put in bag Tada . Best is they are crown cap which are cheap and easy. God Luck

Thanks for all of your replies. I shall try a few. The idea about Magners bottles is great. I have a trendy student bar just round the corner, they seem to sell it by the shed load!

Ikea do 1 litre flip top bottles for a pound each - not as good as being free, obviously, but we have a few that we use for sloe gin and stuff like that.
